I was on the USS RE Byrd, a Guided Missile Destroyer attached to the 6th fleet when this happened. We locked on our missiles to the attacking planes and was told to stand down. I never understood this until 42 years later. After the Iaralie's broke off the attack, we were sent to guard the ship. I can attest to the ships condition. There were many dead sailors and many wounded. Not being able to defend the USS Liberty during the attack still hurts to this day.The 60's were a mixed up time.
